What Security Precautions Should I take when Planning a Vacation?
Travelers should familiarize themselves with their destinations, both to get the most enjoyment out of the visit and to avoid known dangers. Travelers should also be aware of restrictions on items to another country and on items that may be brought back into your country upon your return. You can check with the embassies of your destination countries as to prohibited items.
Copies Copies Copies!
Make photocopies of each and every travel document that you have. Driver’s License, itinerary, passport, etc. Give one set to a travel companion and keep one set on you, separate from the originals. This is in case your originals are lost or stolen.
What Steps Should I take for Credit Card Security?
Take your major credit cards, such as, Visa, Master Card and American Express. You won't have to risk your safety by carrying and displaying large amounts of cash. If you lose your card, most credit cards have a low maximum liability limit if you quickly report the card as lost. Credit cards may get you a better exchange rate than changing money to spend yourself. Many times your card will offer an extra guarantee or warranty when you purchase items with your card, but you'll want to read the fine print for exceptions. Many locations require a credit card and will not accept a debit card, so they may have limited use on your travel. Leave all your local store credit cards in a secure location at home, as there will be no need to carry them with you. Notify your credit card bank, especially when leaving the country for card security purposes.
What about Luggage Security?
It is important to have identification tags on all your check in bags and carry-on bags and remember to cut off old luggage tags. It is also suggested to use bags with no straps, hooks or belts, or wheels as these items can get caught in turn or connecting conveyor belts which may jam up systems and tear up bags when they get caught. You can put your name, address and phone number on the inside of the bag along with an itinerary of your travels. Name tags and bag tags on the outside can get torn off and allow others to know who you are without your permission. Colorful or distinctive straps tied firmly around your luggage make it easier to spot on the baggage carousel at the other end.
What about Security at Home when you leave on Vacation?
If you will be away from home for an extended period, you may want to arrange for the delivery of your mail. Some banks and international credit card companies handle mail for customers at their overseas branches. Check with the embassy of your destination country to see if that will be possible there. Make sure you do put a vacation hold on mail to your home to avoid letting others know you are gone for an extended period of time.
