Do I need a Back Up Plan for Waking Up?
It is wise to carry your own little alarm clock to catch an early morning flight or early sightseeing trip. Do not depend solely on the hotel's alarm/wake up call service. A little preparedness is worth not missing a flight out the next morning.
What should I know About my Stay?
It is important to know the area you are staying at. When you check into your hotel, ask at the reception desk to give you a business card with the hotel's name, address and telephone number. This will come in handy in case you get lost or forget the name of your hotel. You will want to know what attractions, places to eat are nearby so you can plan for local transportation.
When Should I make Reservations?
Make reservations well in advance. As the accomodations start to sell out the price of each room goes up, especially if you are visiting a place in peak season. Most hotels allow you to cancel a reservation without a fee up to 24 hours prior to arrival. Not only can you get the best price by booking early, but you may even be able to request the best room available, especially if you pre pay.
What About Checking Out?
Request a late check out so that you can enjoy the local area without hauling luggage/personal items and return for a quick shower to continue your trip refreshed. On one occassion we requested to check out an hour later and after a check of the new days reservation were allowed to stay an extra 4 hours. Never hurts to ask.
What Should I Bring to the Hotel?
Check before traveling to see if your hotel has a hair dryer, iron, coffee maker, etc. to avoid having to pack and travel with these often bulky items. You may want to find out about recreation amenities as well so you know if you need to bring swim wear or work out clothing. (See Travel Light for more on this)
There is No Place Like Home but a well prepared check of lodging at your destination can help!
